Frequently Asked Questions

❔ Do You Offer Private, One-On-One Chess Lessons?

Yes. We offer private, one-on-one lessons. This means students get 100% attention from their tutor. For both our Foundations Program and our Intermediate Program, you would work with a dedicated chess coach, who you would work with for all your lessons. We also offer a few other programs not advertised on our site. To help you select the best program for you, please schedule a consultation.

❔ Who Is MyChessTutor Suitable For?

We work with students of all levels of backgrounds. Our current students range from complete beginners to seasoned tournament competitors. Our youngest student is 5 and our oldest is 88. We have students from nearly all 50 states and multiple countries. As long as you are excited and motivated to learn, we can work with you!

❔ How Do Online Lessons Work?

See How Lessons Work. Lessons are hosted using Zoom & Lichess.org's interactive virtual chess board. This analysis board also allows your coach to draw arrows and highlight squares to aid visual learning since chess is a highly patterned game.

❔ What Do Lessons Cost?

We offer a number of programs catering to various budget levels. Our starting rate for lessons is $35 USD per session, but depending on your budget, needs, and goals, the fee per session can be higher. We would be happy to discuss your options in our consultation call.

❔ Who Will Be My Chess Coach?

One of the tutors in our team will work with you. Once you sign up, you'll tell us more about your goals and expectations, personality, and learning style. You'll also state your preferred timing for lessons. Based on this information and based on our consultation call, we'll assign the best chess coach for you. You will work with the same coach for all your lessons.

❔ How Are Lessons Scheduled?

When you sign-up, you tell us your top timing preferences, and we make one of them work. Once we agree on a day and time, you and your coach will meet at that same day and time every lesson. Scheduling is flexible, and if you need to change on a lesson time, we can usually, but not always, accommodate that request.

❔ What Can I Expect In The Consultation Call?

We'll discuss your goals and expectations, do a quick chess evaluation to assess your level, answer any questions you have, and help you select a program if you decide to move forward with our service. All-in-all, this is a low-stress, enjoyable 15-minute experience over Zoom. We try to overdeliver and even teach you a few things about chess in the call.

❔ How Often Can I Do Lessons?

Students sign up for four lessons at a time and meet anywhere from 1x/week to 3x/week. Upon signing-up, you'll be able to state your lesson frequency preferences. Students must complete four lessons within eight weeks.

❔ What Will I Learn?

In the first lesson, we'll evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and devise a plan of action to help you progress efficiently. We'll teach you the exact thought process of an advanced chess player and equip you with models to make good decisions and play the right moves. See What You'll Learn.

❔ How Much Progress Can I Make?

Expect to see an immediate difference in your thought process within just a few lessons. Within 3-4 months of systematic and diligent work, you will see significant & tangible improvements in your game. Throughout this process, we keep students (and parents of young students) updated on progress.

❔ What If I'm Unsatisfied With My Lessons?

We're confident you'll have a great experience with your chess tutor, but if you feel that your tutor is not a good fit for you, your first lesson of a lesson package is protected. In short, this means we will credit your lesson back to you to be used with another tutor or refund your full amount. If you're unhappy with your first ever lesson, just let us know. Kindly note that trial lessons are non-refundable.

Terms & Conditions, Agreements by Purchasing Lessons, Privacy Policy, & Disclaimers

Last Updated July 30, 2021

'MyChessTutor' is legally known as MYCHESSTUTOR LLC

Definitions:
--> MyChessTutor LLC (“MyChessTutor”, “we”, “us”, "our")
--> The student, and/or the parent/guardian of the student, and/or the individual paying for chess lessons (“you”, “your”, “student”)
--> The service (“chess lessons”, “lessons”)
--> Coaches, who perform the service, and who you work with (“tutor”, “tutors”, “instructor”, “instructors”, “contractors”)

By purchasing lessons from MyChessTutor, you implicitly agree to and understand the following:

Rescheduling & Cancellation Policy: You agree to our 24-hour rescheduling and cancellation policy: if you reschedule and/or cancel a lesson less than 24 hours of an agreed and/or predetermined lesson time, MyChessTutor reserves the right to consider that rescheduled and/or cancelled lesson as a paid & completed lesson.

Missed Lesson Policy: MyChessTutor reserves the right to consider no-shows & missed lessons as paid & completed lessons. While we typically excuse honest mistakes, recurring no-shows will prompt us to count those lessons as paid & completed.

Trial Lessons: Trial lessons (completed or uncompleted) are not eligible for refunds. A payment made for a trial lesson is final and non-refundable.

Payments & Billing: By purchasing lessons, our payment processing partners, www.stripe.com, securely stores your payment method (i.e. the credit card(s) or debit card(s) you used to pay for the service the first time and/or any subsequent times) on their secure servers. We may use your payment method(s) on file in a number of situations. In case you have completed a lesson or lessons that you have not paid for, MyChessTutor reserves the right to use your payment method to create a charge/payment for the amount owed to MyChessTutor and/or for the amount charged on previously completed invoices. Further, you understand that if you complete a lesson of a new invoice that you haven’t paid, this signals your intent to proceed with the lessons in that invoice. As such, MyChessTutor reserves the right to use your payment method to create a charge/payment for the invoice amount. Note that invoices will be sent to you via email to the email address you initially used when purchasing lessons. Whenever MyChessTutor takes action regarding your payments and billing, we will send a receipt and/or communicate via email to the email address you initially used when purchasing lessons. If you ever feel you have been charged in error, please contact us immediately at support@mychesstutor.com.

Do Lessons Expire?: Yes. We have this policy in place to incentivize our chess learners to complete their lessons without excessive rescheduling, otherwise other interested chess learners cannot meet at the time-slot we have booked for you. How does this policy work? Essentially, you have a four-week grace period (in addition to your scheduled time frame, which is defined as 1 lesson = 1 week) to complete all your lessons. For example, if you purchase four lessons at a time, you must complete those four lessons within eight weeks (4 lessons purchase = 4 weeks PLUS a 4 week grace period) of the purchase date. If you purchase six lessons, you must complete those six lessons within ten weeks (6 lessons purchase = 6 weeks PLUS a 4 week grace period) of the purchase date, and so-on-and-so-forth. For 99% of our chess learners, this is plenty of time to get the lessons in. Any uncompleted lessons after the expiration date are non-refundable and considered complete. We don’t want to be difficult to our students (we’ve rarely ever had to enforce this policy) but must still have it to prevent excessive rescheduling by the student. A ‘week’ in this case is defined as 7 days.

MyChessTutor Tutors: You are not allowed to work directly with your assigned coach outside of MyChessTutor. MyChessTutor coaches will NOT entertain any requests to work with students outside of the jurisdiction of MyChessTutor.

Bulk-Booking Rate Discounts & Refund Policy: In some cases, MyChessTutor may offer a discounted rate for bulk lesson subscriptions. Refunds are only available for uncompleted lessons. Since such discounts are contingent on a bulk-booking rate, any requested refund for uncompleted lessons will assume the rate of the previously completed lessons to be the advertised rate of lessons.

General Refund Policy: Completed lessons are not eligible for refunds. Only the first completed lesson in the first purchase of a lesson package with MyChessTutor is eligible for refund as long as the refund is requested before completion of any subsequent lessons. A lesson package includes more than one lesson (often four lessons, like in our Foundations Program). Trial lessons, completed or uncompleted, are not eligible for refund as dictated in the Trial Lessons policy above. Only uncompleted lessons, subject to the other terms of service outlined on this page, are eligible for refund. There is a $5.00 processing and service fee administered on any refund. This fee shall be deducted from any refund amount.

15-Minute Zoom Consultations: There is a $10 USD deposit fee to book a consultation to prevent no-shows and ensure your commitment. This $10 USD fee is credited back to the original payment method only upon your purchase of lessons after the call.

Changes: MyChessTutor reserves the right to vary the terms, conditions, agreements, and disclaimers contained on this page at any time. By continuing to use our service (i.e. you pay for chess lessons and/or take chess lessons and/or engage with MyChessTutor), you implicitly agree to and understand any variations that may be made on this page. While we may provide email notice with regards to major changes, it is ultimately the customer's responsibility to check this page for updates. All changes made on this page take full and final precedence over all former terms, conditions, agreements, and disclaimers contained on this page. If you continue using MyChessTutor by continuing with lessons after a change to its policies, that means you accept and understand the new policies.

Should you have concerns, challenges, or dilemmas of any sort, please contact us as soon as possible, and we will do our best to help you and find a solution. You may reach us by using the contact form on our website or by sending us an email at support@mychesstutor.com
